Message from our Patron
Mr Mark Shuttleworth
Ubuntu is the African concept of people expressing their humanity through other people.
Nelson Mandela described Ubuntu as follows:
A traveler through a country would stop at a village and he didn't have to ask for food or for water. Once he stops, the people give him food, entertain him.
For many years before the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Cape Town was one of the world's top long-haul destinations, famous for Table Mountain, endless winelands and a year-round temperate climate.
This year, 2010, South Africa's Mother City was beamed to the televisions of millions of people all over the world.
They saw our spirit, they saw our culture, they saw our life. Those fortunate to be here during the tournament experienced our open-armed warm hospitality. For many of those watching at home, they chose Cape Town as their next holiday destination.
For Capetonians, we welcomed the world into our city, and our hearts burst with pride at being part of the incredible spectacle of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
Without question, the most famous and photographed views of the City and Table Mountain is from the north, Cape Town North.
(of course,my favourite view is from 400 miles up, but I don’t get to see it that way very often)
And at the heart of Cape Town North is the small town of Durbanville, and this is where I call home.
Durbanville doesn't have a mountain, nor a waterfront or harbour. But what it does have is a unique flavour and experience for those travellers who are weary of the city bustle and noise, just 20 minutes away.
Wide open spaces, rolling hills, leafy lanes.
World-class, award-winning wines, from vines that are cooled by gentle offshore breezes.
Ostriches, game farms and nature reserves.
A wide range of accommodation, from self-catering cottages, through guest houses and small boutique hotels to large corporate hotels.
One of the largest shopping centres in Africa (with free parking!).
A thriving cultural community, with art galleries, and theatres that buzz with energy and top class performers.
A vibrant nightlife with every possible form of entertainment, from cosy restaurants with fresh produce, to bars, clubs and cinemas.
But the one thing that draws visitors back to Cape Town North time after time cannot be bought, imported, created or built - it is the unparalleled hospitality of its residents.
This is a place where visitors are treated as friends, not walking wallets. Complete strangers are invited for a braai – strangers no more, but new friends creating memories for life.
This is a single destination, with the spirit of Ubuntu. There are no Tourist Traps here, no inflated prices, no worries. Come to stay, or come for a day. Give yourself a chance to pause, breathe and relax.
I consider myself fortunate to be part of the story of Durbanville, and am deeply honoured to have been asked to be patron of the Cape Town North Tourism Initiative.
The “hands-on” approach of the team behind the Association will ensure that Cape Town North will thrive as a tourist destination, and that the needs of all visitors will be catered for by all that Cape Town North has to offer.
Welcome to the unique flavour of Cape Town North. Welcome to my home.
